Program Involvement

Developing a Communication Infrastructure

Our work with construction companies contributed to the development of this program. Workers indicated that the program helped them make improvements at their company, benefiting employers and employees in many ways. Outcomes for partnering companies could include:

Short Term Benefits

  • Needs assessment report
  • Action plans
  • Toolbox talks
  • Take away materials
  • Gift cards & snacks

Long Term Benefits

  • Policies, programs, and practices that make workers healthier and safer long term
  • Better communication and relationships between field workers and management
  • A system for improving health and safety and worker-management communication that can integrate with your existing health and safety programs

There are no direct costs to participate in the program as our work is funded by a grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Workers who complete surveys will receive gift cards as a token of our appreciation for their participation.

Program Phases

Intervention Plan

  1. Needs Assessment: Two 15-minute toolbox talks with worker crews to discuss issues related to their health, safety, and well-being with the ARM for SUBS framework
  2.

  3. Qualitative Report Generation: Research staff will generate a qualitative report that compiles the needs assessment data and identifies key themes for companies to prioritize throughout the remainder of the intervention
  4.

  5. Steering Committee: 4-8 employees of varying positions and experience levels discuss and create an action plan to address one of the key themes highlights in the qualitative assessment report
  6.

  7. Implement Action Plan & Toolbox Talks: The developed action plan is enacted and disseminated though management and communicated to foremen and workers through toolbox talks conducted by research staff that allow workers to ask questions about the resulting changes

Evaluation Plan

  1. Worker Surveys: baseline and follow-up surveys will be conducted to help the research staff evaluate if health and safety culture and opinions have changed as a result of the program
  2.

  3. Management Surveys: surveys will help researchers assess whether constructs such as leadership commitment, safety participation, and safety climate change as a result of the program

Process Evaluation

Research staff will conduct worker focus groups, management interviews, and steering committee member interviews to obtain qualitative data about ARM for SUBS program involvement.
